When living in Rhode Island – surrounded by naturally stunning ocean landscapes - it can be all too easy to overlook the troubling reality of the achievement gap in Rhode Island’s public schools. It could be easy to fail to realize that students in our urban districts, where most of our students in poverty and English-language learners reside, perform well below the national average – with achievement levels lower than similar districts nationwide. Right now, only 12% of 11th graders in RI’s core urban districts are proficient in Math, based on the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) results*.

But now that you know, what will you do about it?

If teaching is something you’ve always thought about doing, apply to RITF.  If you are selected to the second cohort, then this is the time for you to finally make the switch to the most rewarding career you will ever find.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                - 2009 Math Fellow

Rhode Island Teaching Fellows is an alternate route to teaching certification program that is designed to recruit and train socially-driven individuals who are motivated to close the achievement gap in Rhode Island by becoming teachers in some of our highest-need public schools. We seek outstanding professionals and recent graduates to make a difference in the lives of the students who need you the most.

This highly selective program offers the opportunity to join a rigorous, accelerated route to becoming a teacher.  We are looking for outstanding candidates to teach in the critical shortage subject areas of secondary math, science and special education in classrooms within the urban school districts in Rhode Island that have historically had a record of low student achievement.

Candidates will benefit from a streamlined application and selection process and, if selected, will have the opportunity to participate in an intensive Summer Training Institute in summer 2010 while seeking full-time teaching positions for the fall. Fellows will pursue their teaching certification while teaching full-time and will receive a full-time teacher’s salary once they secure a teaching position.

There is no one profile of an ideal Rhode Island Teaching Fellows candidate. Fellows may be professionals with years of experience in the business or non-profit world who are ready to change careers to make an impact where they are most needed. Fellows may be fresh out of college and ready to leverage their academic success into a teaching career. As a Fellow, you will become part of a dynamic and dedicated network of new educational leaders, working with other progressive educators throughout Rhode Island to raise academic achievement in our urban public schools... starting in your classroom.
